Find out more about ETIAS, the European Travel Authorization System.

Since 2019, the European Commission has approved the creation of the  ETIAS, the  European Travel Information and Authorization System. At the time, many travelers were confused by believing it was a  visa to enter Europe, but that's not quite it.

The ETIAS system will be made official to enter European territory.  It is a travel authorization that becomes mandatory for  citizens exempt from visas to enter the  Schengen area  from 2022.

The purpose of adding an extra step before travel is to register and review information about all visa-exempt travelers to enter countries that are party to the agreement in advance. Brazilians are included in this group.

Invited by the information portal  ETIAS Visa , specializing in information about the ETIAS travel authorization, we bring to our readers all the information about the document, which will be required for circulation in the Schengen Area from 2022 onwards.

WHAT IS ETIAS?

ETIAS is simply a travel authorization. As of 2022, it becomes mandatory for citizens of visa-free countries to enter the Schengen Area.

All applicants will be screened in international security databases, including Interpol, in order to verify and prevent potential threats to the countries visited. This process should be quick, but it can take up to two weeks if additional information is needed.

Once approved, ETIAS will entitle multiple entries to Europe for a period of up to three years or until the expiration date of the passport (whichever comes first). During this time, trips with a maximum duration of 90 days within a period of 180 days are allowed, in the same way as the entry into signatory countries of the  Schengen Treaty .

🔶 Important: Brazilian travelers who wish to stay in the Schengen Area for more than 90 days must apply for a visa in the destination country. ETIAS is not a valid travel document in this case and exceeding the time limit allowed for tourists can lead to fines and even deportation.

HOW TO APPLY FOR ETIAS

It is difficult to predict how the exact functioning of ETIAS will be, but much information has already been released about the European travel authorization that will come into effect in 2022.

The registration to obtain the document will be all done online and should take a few minutes, through a form to be filled in with personal data, documents, health information and travel plans. It will also be necessary to pay a fee, in the amount of €7 (approximately R$32).

To complete the form, travelers must have:

  1. Brazilian passport valid for up to 03 months beyond the intended date of stay;

  2. Credit or debit card to pay the ETIAS fee;

  3. Email address to receive ETIAS approval.

The travel authorization will be received by email and, although it is not necessary to print it, it is important to keep a copy of it online, as it may be requested at any time during the trip.

It is possible that some people will be contacted by email if more documents or registration information are needed, so the tip is to always keep an eye on your inbox.

🔶 Important: the travel authorization is not a guarantee that the traveler will be able to enter the requested country. Admission will continue to be made at the discretion of the immigration officer to whom you will appear upon arrival on the mainland.
The countries that will require the ETIAS are:

Countries that so far will not require the ETIAS document.
